Email Security in Education

Secure the future of learning, today and tomorrow.

Maintaining the security of your school’s email is an important responsibility. There are many types of attacks that hackers will attempt in order to breach your security and gain access to your server.

In this webinar, we’ll be sharing best practices for email security in your school. Learn how email is used as the number one method for attacking schools (and other organizations), through phishing, spear phishing, mail spam, email hijacking, and spoofing being the most frequently used attacks.

Here, an experienced school CTO answers questions and shares his thoughts on the practicalities and aspects of email security.

  • It has the highest risk of damage if not correctly secured
  • Learn what email security threats are
  • How real-world hackers are using school data
  • How it can be prevented

Email Fraud: A $26 Billion+ Problem

According to Terranova Worldwide Corp (Terranova Security), 20% of recipients click a phishing link inside an email and over 50% of those who clicked, submitted their credentials on the landing page. The Education sector was in amongst the highest percentage (70%) who submitted credential on a landing page.

In 2019, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received nearly 1,300 phishing-related complaints every day and reported billions of dollars in losses. According to IC3, CEO Fraud (a type of phishing) alone was worth $26 billion.

About Libraesva

Libraesva Email Security Gateway (ESG) was deployed in a private cloud environment and put through a proof of concept to demonstrate the effectiveness of having a dedicated email security solution. Adding Libraesva ESG was surprisingly effortless, requiring just a single call to get the solution fully implemented and integrated with Google.

Libitz noticed the improvements in email filtering immediately. “I am really impressed with the effectiveness of Libraesva’s innovative filtering technology,“ says Libitz. “It’s a substantial upgrade over the native Google email security. In particular, the Adaptive Trust Engine and Sandboxing are very accurate, and I see very few errors, if any at all.”

The integration of the Libraesva ESG had an immediate positive effect. Libitz estimates he reduced his time spent on email security by over 50%, which allowed him to get laptops prepared for all the students learning from home. “I’m not sure if we would have been successful in meeting the deadlines to enable remote learning had we not deployed Libraesva,” explains Libitz. “Instead of spending days per month managing email rules, quarantines, and user requests, now I spend hours. It’s eased the pressure on me enormously and allowed me to use my time more productively.”

School districts in New Jersey trust Libraesva

Lenny Libitz, CTO of South Bound Brook Public School, knew for some time that his school district needed a more effective email security strategy. He had been managing Google for Education for several years and built up an exhaustive and time-consuming set of custom rules and filters to keep his users safe from the everincreasing inbound email threats. Unfortunately, the work to keep the email filters up to date became untenable as the need for remote learning became a greater focus due to COVID-19.

“As CTO of our school district during COVID-19, my immediate priority became the migration to remote learning. While my time was already limited before, under the new conditions, I had no time at all to manage our email security effectively,” says Libitz. “I searched for solutions before that complemented Google for Education, but they were always too expensive and seemed to require too much administration and attention for our small team. Fortunately, that’s when I discovered Libraesva.”
